By replacing the usual 100 W light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb you can save as much as 12.35 EUR (372 SKK) per year .

The calculation assumes that you use light 3 hours per day on average, your tariff is ŠTANDARD MAXI (DD2) and the new fluorescent light bulb has an input power of 23 W, which corresponds to the usual 100 W light bulb.

We will calculate for you how much you can save by replacing the usual light bulb with a fluorescent light bulb and the pay-back period of your investment.

Many households are now replacing the usual light bulbs with energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs. Why? Despite a higher price they can save as much as 75 % of power as compared to the usual light bulbs. The currently produced fluorescent bulbs have a lifetime exceeding the original models by several times. A 10-year lifetime calculated for 10.000 hours of lighting is becoming a standard. To compare, the lifetime of the usual light bulb is approximately 1.000 hours.

Several types of energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs are produced; the most popular is the round shape of a large drop. The producers managed to eliminate also the initial shortcoming of these light sources, i.e. short lifetime associated with the number of switching cycles. One switching cycle means switching the light source on and off once. Several years ago the fluorescent light bulbs were able to achieve a high lifetime only under the condition that they were lit for a longer time without frequent switching off and on again. The “high-end” fluorescent light bulbs for intensive use are designed for as much as 500.000 switching cycles or an infinite number of switching cycles during their lifetime.

Energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs have certain typical features. These include a slower start-up of the so-called light flux. In practice it means that if you switch on an energy efficient fluorescent light bulb it takes several tens of seconds until the light achieves the required intensity. An innovation on the market are the so-called “electrodeless” lamps with fast start-up time and a lifetime of as many as 15 years (or 15.000 lighting hours, respectively). However, they are still expensive.

What kind of lights to choose. Energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs are suitable for rooms where they are lit for a longer time. The reason is for example the above mentioned slower start-up, which is hardly evident in the household. Fluorescent light bulbs are ideal for living room, home office or children’s room. On the other hand, it is not recommended to use energy efficient fluorescent lamps e.g. in the bathroom and WC due to a short time of lighting and frequent switching off. Energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs are less frequently used in bedrooms as their light is perceived as “cold”.

Halogen spotlights are suitable for the illumination of the counter-top or table in the kitchen or in the bathroom due to their glowing white light and high intensity. Halogen light bulbs are used mainly for decorative purposes and highlighting. Halogen light bulbs are usually produced as low voltage bulbs (12 V) and can last as many as 3.000 hours which is a triple of the lifetime of the usual light bulb.

In larger spaces use several light sources which are not dependent on each other. If you do not use any of them, switch it off.
